Poseidon's Journey: Rehabilitated Loggerhead released into the boundless seas of Malta

Poseidon, a majestic female Loggerhead Turtle, weighing approximately 12.5 kilograms, was rescued by the Malta Wildlife Rescue Team and brought to our marine wildlife rehabilitation centre on August the 25th, 2021. Her arrival was marked by two deep wounds in her shell, injuries inflicted by the propeller of a boat. The trauma not only scarred her shell but also hindered the movement of her rear flippers, making even the simplest act of swimming a daunting challenge for poor Poseidon. 

Upon her arrival, Poseidon's condition was nothing short of critical. She was weakened, wounded, and her journey back to health seemed like an insurmountable task. However, it was the dedication of the tireless Wildlife Rescue Team, and the support of a caring community that ignited a beacon of hope for Poseidon, by kindly donating to The Wildlife Rescue Team. 

Recovery Story

Daily treatments, care, and unwavering attention were the cornerstones of Poseidon's path to recovery. Under the watchful eyes of our devoted team, she embarked on a journey of healing and adaptation. The young loggerhead turtle had to relearn how to swim with confidence, a feat she undertook with a courage that left all in awe. 

The healing process was slow and tedious, as it often is with injured sea turtles. Turtle carapace injuries, much like Poseidon's, require time, patience, expertise and above all, hope. And through every challenge, Poseidon showed a remarkable tenacity, inspiring all her carers to press forward with healing her shell. 

Now, after more than two years of dedicated care and nurturing, it is time for Poseidon to embrace her ultimate destiny – the boundless sea. The time has come for her to leave behind the shelter of the care centre, where her story of recovery became a symbol of resilience and return to the wild where she belongs.

Poseidon's journey is a living testament to the beauty of second chances. It is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, nature's creatures can heal, adapt, and thrive. Her story is not just about the strength of a single turtle; it reflects the strength of a community that came together to mend a wounded and endangered animal. 

As Poseidon takes her first tentative steps into the waves, we stand as silent witnesses to her remarkable odyssey. The sea welcomes her with open arms, as it always has and always will. And though she may be leaving her place of care, Poseidon carries with her the love, hope, and inspiration that have defined her journey.
