Our previous biggest winner arrived in late April 2016, when Matthias from Germany banked over €22 million (approx. $39M NZD). Spain's El Gordo, also known as the Spanish Christmas Lottery, takes place every December on the 22nd of the month. It is considered the largest lottery in the world, thanks to the volume of money that is paid out. Thanks to Lottoland, a syndicate of players outside of Spain were able to bet on the results, and walked away with €4 million (approx. $7M NZD) to share between themselves.

Matching 6 numbers and the bonus ball meant Mario stepped right into our top 10 biggest winners list. The Italian native had already started planning his dream life when he arrived at Lottoland to collect his winner's cheque. He plans to take his family back to his homeland and settle in the Apulia region in Southern Italy, where he intends to enjoy a leisurely life managing a rural farm.

A truck driver from the Midlands became a millionaire thanks to his 60p line on the Polish Lotto. He was met by none other than Chris Tarrant at his winner's ceremony in London, where he was presented with his novelty cheque. Lucky winner Adam started playing through Lottoland as he enjoyed being able to bet on the results via our official app. The career trucker has been behind the wheel for much of his adult life, and despite enjoying his job he hinted that the windfall might be the chance he needed to pursue other life goals.

23-year-old Michael from Wolfsburg became one of our youngest Lottoland millionaires when he won by betting on Powerball. Car salesman Michael had no plans to blow his cash on a fancy sports-car though, he planned to support his local business and buy a top-of-the-line VW instead!

NBA fan Dennis from Germany really made a slam dunk with his big win from betting on EuroJackpots in May of 2017. He was already planning a trip Stateside but promised to do it in style after winning big with Lottoland, as he planned to upgrade his American road-trip with a nice sports car and a trip to see his beloved Golden State Warriors play in San Francisco.

As a grandmother of eleven, perhaps it's just as well that our top Aussie winner scooped such a large prize from betting on MegaMillions, since no doubt the grandkids were expecting a few treats! The 56-year-old Melbourne winner won over a million Australian dollars and could hardly believe her ears when she received the call from Lottoland confirming her big win.
Which Lotteries Are Best?
There are many answers to that question depending on what you hope to gain from playing the lottery. For example, the lottery game with the best odds of taking home a win is the French Lotto with a 1/6 chance. The biggest jackpots are the American games, but the chances of landing a win are considerably lower. Jackpots of the US giants regularly go over hundreds of millions of dollars though and have made thousands of winners over the years. Few jackpots are as relatively easy to win as the Polish Mini Lotto. There is just a 1:850,000 chance of claiming the top prize, making it a popular game for people all over the world. If that seems high, compare it to the American games which have odds in the tens of millions against winning the jackpot. Of course, nothing else can compete when it comes to the sheer scale and size of jackpots than Powerball and MegaMillions. So far, the top prize of each has been in the region of $1.537bn USD, or around $2.35bn NZD.
Winner Highlights
To date, Christina is our most celebrated winner at Lottoland. In 2017, the former office cleaner from Berlin won the equivalent of $150m NZD. She picked all seven numbers of the Eurojackpot game corredctly and planned to travel the US with her family to celebrate her big win. Before that, Matthias from Germany held the crown as the biggest Lottoland winner for about a year. In April 2016, he claimed a $39m NZD prize and flew to Gibraltar to pick up the cheque for his win on the German Lotto. A few months before that, a big winner whose position at the top of the pile lasted just a few months, was Michael with the $24m NZD he won on the German Lotto. We expect that Christina’s big win will be surpassed in time, but so far, her jackpot record has stood for over two years.
How To Maximize Your Lottery Winning Odds
Which game you play through Lottoland depends on a number of issues, including your personal game preferences. If it’s a big prize you want, play the American lotteries. If it’s a greater chance of a smaller prize you prefer, try some of the smaller European games. There are steps you can take to maximize your chances of winning though, by not falling into some of the common traps that other players fall into.
